How is communication managed?

You can freely communicate with your sponsored student any time through our sponsorship platform. As time permits, your sponsored student will respond through the same platform. The platform will notify you via email that you have a new message, you will sign into your account to view the message, photos, videos, etc. Feel free to upload photos and videos of your family as well. We encourage on-going and frequent communication. We do request that you refrain from any references made to your student about visiting you in the US.

Can I give my student a gift?

We are not able to receive any packages or cards through the mail. If you wish to gift your sponsored student something for his birthday, Christmas, etc., you can send money and specify what you wish him to have. Of course, if you visit us, you are welcome to bring any gifts you wish. No cell phones. If you wish to donate a computer to your sponsored student, the computer will be subject to the same regulations of controlled use applied at the project. Upon graduation, your sponsored student will have full possession and use of the computer. We encourage you to ask us questions about what gifts are most needed.

What does the sponsorship cover?

EVERYTHING! The sponsorship of $600 a month covers all the student’s normal monthly expenses. Food, housing, transportation, staff, learning materials, workshops, facilities, sports equipment, everything. We make sure to offer a holistic perspective for how we educate. The students attend the local highschool but your giving provides the rest.

Are partial sponsorships an option?

The monthly sponsorship for one student is $600 per month. Our platform will allow you to enter your desired payment method and the money will be deducted monthly. You can also make a one-time annual or two-time semiannual payment. If $600 per month is out of your budget range but you really want to be involved, we encourage you to recruit from your family and friends so that collectively you can pay the monthly amount. We require one contact per student, but you can easily share any letters, etc. with your co-sponsors.

What’s in it for me?

Your sponsoring a scholarship gives the student the hope of a brighter future. You giving them this opportunity opens up new learning experiences that wouldn’t otherwise be available for the average teenager here in Honduras. You can empower them to educational success and give them a real connection that just demonstrates that there is someone else out there who cares. This sponsorship connects you to a community here in Honduras and through your support of one student you are pouring into the lives of their family and their community. You can have a true partnership with us to encourage and edify the student to succeed. You give the child a chance at being a first generational (literate) High school graduation. The Project is willing to facilitate your visit so that Sponsors can get to know the youth in-person and personally. You can experience what the Project means to those who are a part of this program.

Can I visit?

We hope that over the course of the student’s stay in our program, a sponsor can visit at least one time. More frequent visits would be great. It is not, however, a requirement. If you come as a member of a visiting team, we will make sure you get some special time with your sponsored student. If you or you and your family wish to visit us in Santa Rosa de Copán, we can make your in-country travel arrangements, hotel accommodations, etc. (for a fee), making it very possible and easy to visit. During your visit, you will be encouraged to participate in any of your sponsored student’s on-going activities where allowed. Perhaps there will also be time for a special outing with your sponsored student, again depending on the time of year and your student’s programmed schedule. And certainly, we would love for you to visit for any milestone events, such as graduation.

How long does the sponsorship last?

Ideally a sponsorship would last until the student graduates from high school. Most of the boys come to us once they enter the 7th grade. In some cases, a sponsorship could continue if the student wishes to go to university and if the sponsor desires to continue to help. This would only apply to a select number of students who are invited to stay at the project as apprentices while studying at the university. In the case of a change in the sponsor’s financial status, resulting in their inability to continue to sponsor the student, the program will find a new sponsor. In the rare case of your sponsored student leaving the program, we will notify you immediately and give you the opportunity to change your sponsorship to another student.
